Konecranes Ends Business in Iran, Becomes Fifth Crane Manufacturer to Pull Out Following UANI Cranes Campaign

New York, NY - United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) on Wednesday applauded Finnish crane manufacturer Konecranes for ending its business in Iran. Konecranes is the fifth international crane manufacturer to pull out of Iran in response to UANI’s Cranes Campaign.

On August 18, UANI publicly called on Konecranes to end its Iran business. In response, Konecranes informed UANI that it had made the decision to “withdraw from the Iranian market” and is now “systematically refus[ing] all opportunities to sell new equipment and services to the country.”

Eye on Iran: Iran Feels Heat Over Support for Damascus

Top Stories

WSJ: ”Iran’s steadfast support for Syria’s regime has rapidly eroded Tehran’s credibility among Arabs, leaving the country with a foreign-policy dilemma as popular uprisings mount across the region. Supporting President Bashar al-Assad will further diminish Tehran’s already troubled standing in the region, political analysts say. But abandoning him would crumble Iran’s platform in Syria. ‘They’ve lost a lot of soft power and credibility, and the situation in Syria makes it worse,’ said Paul Salem, director of the Middle East Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. ‘There are new revolutions and heroes to look up to in the Middle East, and Iran is passé.’ … Iranian officials, as well as leaders of Iran-backed Hezbollah, appear to have taken a selective approach to the Arab uprisings, cheering the movements in Egypt and elsewhere as an ‘Islamic awakening,’ while rebuking unrest in Syria as a plot by Israel and the West.” http://t.uani.com/pmn6K8

Time to Phone and Fax to Demand a Halt to Mitra Kahrom’s Deportation to Iran.

We have very little time before the Swedish government goes forward with its illegal decision to deport Mitra Kahrom to the bloody hands of the Islamic Republic, on Friday 2 September. It is up to us to make sure that doesn’t happen by phoning and faxing the Swedish authorities and putting pressure on them. Keep in mind that the decision in Mitra’s case has implications for at least 2 other women who have fled shari’a persecution; if Mitra is deported, those other two are at higher risk of deportation as well.

Background for Mitra’s case:
Mitra is both a political activist against the Islamic Republic regime, and a victim of persecution under the Islamic Republic’s shari’a law. More details about her case can be found in the following articles:
Article 1. The Islamic Republic Should Know that Until the Fall of This Regime, Mitra Kahrom Will Fight.

Eye on Iran: Iran Won’t Stop Uranium Enrichment Program

Top Stories

AP: “Iran won’t stop uranium enrichment activities the U.N. has demanded it halt, the country’s nuclear chief said Monday. Iran says it needs stockpiles for a medical research reactor, and that the level of enrichment – up to 20 percent – is far below the more than 90 percent needed to build a nuclear weapon. But U.S. officials have expressed concern Iran is taking steps toward greater enrichment. Iran denies claims by the U.S. and its allies it seeks to build a nuclear weapon. The official IRNA news agency on Monday quoted nuclear chief Fereidoun Abbasi as saying that Iran will continue to enrich uranium to 3.5 percent in its main uranium enrichment plant in Natanz but will carry out 20 percent enrichment activities at its underground Fordo site. IRNA also quoted Abbasi as saying Iran had asked the International Atomic Energy Agency to provide documentation of accusations about its nuclear program ‘so that we can examine them.’”http://t.uani.com/quTJzJ

Iran: Ökologische Katastrophe abwenden – Salzsee/Urmiya-See trocknet aus

Stellungnahme von Claudia Roth (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen):

Ökologische Katastrophe in Iran abwenden – Inhaftierte freilassen
—————————————————————–

Zu den Protesten im Nordwesten Irans und zur Situation rund um den
Urmiya-See erklärt Claudia Roth, Bundesvorsitzende von BÜNDNIS 90/DIE

einzufordern.”

URGENT ACTION: Write to the European Parliament in Support of the People in Iraqi Kurdistan

The Mothers of Peace: This is a group of Kurdish mothers from Turkey who have gone out and used their bodies as human shields to block the roads so that the Turkish military cannot pass. Peace Mother Hava Kıran made a brief announcement saying, “We are blocking traffic so soldiers do not die. This action is a natural right of mothers. We closed this road so no more mothers are hurt.”

Please send an email based on this letter to the European Union to help stop the attacks on the people in Iraqi Kurdistan.

PLEASE SEND TO: jerzy.buzek@europarl.europa.eu &maja.kocijancic@ec.europa.eu

To the European Parliament:

I am writing to express my deep concern about the attacks by the Turkish government and the Islamic Republic of Iran against people in Iraqi Kurdistan, against their villages, homes, and livelihoods.

I want the European Union to pressure the government of Turkey and the Islamic Republic of Iran to stop their attacks immediately, and to compensate the people in Iraqi Kurdistan for the losses of lives, homes, livelihoods, and infrastructure, all of which have been destroyed in these illegal attacks.

I also want the European Union to condemn the media blackout on Iraqi Kurdistan that has been imposed by the Iraqi government. The EU should demand that the Iraqi government immediately lift all restrictions on the access of international media to the area.

Sincerely,
[Your name]

September 3, 2011: Global Demonstrations in Defense of People in Iraqi Kurdistan and against the Atrocities of the Islamic Republic of Iran & the Turkish Government!

An entire family of seven was killed in attacks by the Turkish and Islamic Republic regimes on civilians in Iraqi Kurdistan.

What is happening?
For the past several weeks, people in Iraqi Kurdistan have been the targets of military operations by both the Islamic Republic of Iran and by the Turkish military.

The Turkish government and the Islamic Republic claim that the reason they are launching air and ground assaults in this region is to defend against attacks by armed militants. But in fact, these governments are attacking villages, farms, livestock, and civilian vehicles. They are targeting the people in Iraqi Kurdistan, and using the armed militants as an excuse to justify their atrocities.

Father Breaks His Silence After 26 Months: They Would Not Even Allow Us To See His Body In The Morgue

Family of 19 year old Amir Yousefzadeh, who was killed during July 2009 post-election protests in Tehran, breaks their silence after 26 months.

July of 2009 during the anti government protests, a number of students were protesting around Enghlab square and Tehran university. They were attacked and beaten by batons resulting in injuries that sent many of them to hospital.

Amir Yousefzadeh was one of the severely injured students who was taken to the hospital but lost his life and died there.

In the last 26 months, despite all the threats to remain silent, many families who lost loved ones have spoken up and gave interviews to the media. However, there are still families that, due to threats and pressures, do not feel safe enough to speak up and give details of how their children died.

Wikileaks & Iran Flashback: How A Kickboxing Champion Became “Israeli Spy” & Was Sentenced To Death

We reported last week on the sentencing of 26-year-old Majid Jamali Fashi to death after he was convicted of the assassination of physicist Masoud Alimohammadi in January 2010.

The case always had intriguing elements, given Alimohammadi’s supposed connections with Iran’s nuclear programme; however, in January 2011, EA uncovered an entirely new dimension.

Jamali Fashi, a professional kickboxer, supported the regime by beating up protesters after the 2009 Presidential elections — so how could he have be an enemy of the regime by working for Israel to murder an Iranian scientist and hinder Tehran’s nuclear research?

Eye on Iran: Tehran’s Ghost Fleet

Top Stories

WSJ: “This June, a merchant ship flying the Hong Kong flag and sailing under the name of the Atlantic called at the Mexican port of Lazaro Cardenas-the southern end of a trade corridor to the U.S., advertised as ‘the fastest route to the heart of North America.’ That might be unremarkable, except the Atlantic, formerly called the Dreamland, and before that the Iran Saeidi, belongs to a curious network of 19 bulk carriers, all flagged out of Hong Kong and all blacklisted by the U.S. Treasury for their links to Iran. According to a recent transcript of Hong Kong’s Marine Department Shipping Register, the Atlantic is owned by a Hong Kong-registered company called Harvest Supreme Limited. Scratch the surface and Harvest Supreme tracks back to an Iranian address, as do 18 other obscure and interlinked Hong Kong ship-owning companies with names such as Grand Trinity Limited and Sparkle Brilliant Development Limited. These are the hallmarks of the global shell game with which Iran continues to dodge U.S. and United Nations sanctions. This shell game began around 2008, when the U.S. imposed sanctions on Iran’s state shipping company, the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines, or IRISL, for its role in provisioning Iran’s rogue missile and nuclear programs. The U.S. Treasury also blacklisted a slew of IRISL affiliates and 123 of its ships, including all 19 of these merchant ships now flagged to Hong Kong, making it potentially a crime under U.S. law to do business with them. Treasury also began pressuring players outside U.S. jurisdiction to shun Iran’s proliferators, or risk being cut off from commerce with the U.S. IRISL responded by camouflaging much of its fleet, reflagging and renaming scores of its blacklisted ships. It parceled out some to newly minted affiliates and created shell companies abroad to serve as nominal owners. Behind the scenes, IRISL retained control.” http://t.uani.com/q2YZt2

URGENT: Stop the Illegal Deportation of Mitra Kahrom to the Misogynist Islamic Republic of Iran.

Mitra Kahrom was forced to endure extreme violence at the hands of a brutal husband whose crimes against Mitra are endorsed by a brutal and misogynist regime. Unable to tolerate life under such repression, Mitra went to the streets in protest against the Islamic Republic; she was identified and hunted by the regime. Subsequently, she fled to Sweden and has been openly and vocally active in organizations that oppose the Islamic Republic regime. Mitra has numerous grounds on which to claim asylum in Sweden. Despite this, the Swedish government wants to send her back to a place in hell where the flames burn hotter for women: the Swedish government wants to deport Mitra back to Iran. We at Mission Free Iran oppose the Swedish government’s illegal efforts to deport Mitra, and we ask that you join us in demanding Mitra’s right to asylum in Sweden. A sample letter-writing action appears below Mitra’s story.

The Latest from Iran: Back to Political Sniping?

1448 GMT: James Miller is back, and he provides a Cross-post from the Syria liveblog:

Iran’s Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Saleh warned the “outsiders” and called on Damascus to recognise the “legitimate demands” of its people. He said:

The government should answer to the demands of its people, be it Syria, Yemen or other countries.

The people of these nations have legitimate demands and the governments should reply to these demands as soon as possible.

Syria is an important link in the resistance chain [against Israel] and some want to cut off this link in the chain. A vacuum in the Syrian regime would have an unpredictable impact for the region and its neighbours.

Imprisoned Journalist in Need of Emergency Medical Treatment

A source close to the family of imprisoned journalist Keyvan Samimi, who is in his 60s, told the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran that a tumor found in Samimi’s liver has caused grave concern to his family and he must be immediately hospitalized to prevent the tumor’s further growth. Judicial authorities continue to refuse furlough for Samimi and decline to comment on the reasons for the refusal.

“Other than the tumor, he suffers from severe arthritis in his neck and legs. He likes to read, so he has asked his family for a desk and a chair, as he is no longer able to sit on the floor to read. His family prepared the desk and table, but prison authorities have not yet delivered the furniture to Mr. Samimi,” said the source.

Kayvan Samimi, Editor-in-Chief of the banned newspaper Nameh, member of the Society in Defense of Press Freedom, and member of the Committee to Pursue Arbitrary Arrests and The Right To Education Committee, was arrested at his home on 13 June 2009, just one day after the disputed presidential election. He was sentenced to six years in prison at Branch 26 of Tehran Revolutionary Court. He was transferred to Rajaee Shahr Prison in December 2009 along with several other political prisoners. Samimi has gone on multiple hunger strikes in prison.
