The Latest from Iran (31 May): Towards a Diplomatic Crash in Moscow?

1539 GMT: Poking the UAE. Last month President Ahmadinejad visited Abu Musa, an island in the Persian Gulf which is claimed by both Iran and the UAE. Leaders of Gulf countries denounced the trip, the first by an Iranian political leader since the Islamic Revolution, as “provocative”, while observers speculated on the motives of the President and the regime.

Now Iranian State media reports that the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, General Mohammad Ali Jafari, has visited Iranian combat units on Abu Musa and the other disputed islands of Greater and Lesser Tunbs.

Jafari, accompanied by the commander of the IRGC’s navy, Rear-Admiral Ali Fadavi, proclaimed, “Through regional cooperation, we can provide security of these strategic waters, disappoint enemies and add to the glory of Islam.” He urged regional states, “particularly, those located in the southern parts of the Persian Gulf”, to “cut off the hands of the global arrogant powers from the region by unity and brotherhood”.

1253 GMT: Ahmadinejad Watch. France 24 has posted the full video of its interview with President Ahmadinejad in Tehran on Wednesday. We have not taken much of significance from the discussion, butheadlines include the President’s declaration that Iran stands on the principle that it can enrich uranium to 20% — although he is open to arrangements of guaranteed supply from outside countries — and his condemnation of last weekend’s killings in Houla in Syria, without attributing blame to the Assad regime:

“Keys to My Home” is director Luna Shad’s documentary about the lives of Iranian refugees in Turkey on their way to relocation. Since June 2009, at least 150 Iranian journalists have fled Iran. Half of them are under the age of 35. Most of them crossed over the Turkish or Iraqi borders, facing difficult paths to relocation. Dozens have permanently resettled in Western countries, most having been granted political asylum.

The film follows journalist Delbar Tavakoli through her relocation experience to France. Delbar’s fears, worries, and hopes shape the landscape of the film.

Bereits seit einiger Zeit schlägt das Kino aus dem Iran hohe Wellen. Junge Filmemacher haben sich vom Image der beschaulichen Filme ihrer Vorgänger emanzipiert und verleihen der urbanen und westlich geprägten Jugend eine Stimme. Zwar zählt sich keiner der Filmemacher zu jener iranischen “Grünen Bewegung”, die gegen den Wahlsieg von Präsident Ahmadinedschad protestierte. Doch ihre Filme finden starke Bilder für die Absurdität der Repression und verfolgen die Überlebensstrategien ihrer Protagonisten mit engagierter Anteilnahme.

In seinem Spielfilm “No one knows about Persian Cats” porträtiert Bahman Ghobadi in semi-dokumentarischen Bildern die Underground-Musikszene Teherans und fängt die Träume und Sehnsüchte der iranischen Jugend in bislang nicht gesehener Offenheit ein. Die Folge war allerdings Ghobadis endgültiger Bruch mit den offiziellen Stellen in Teheran. Seither lebt und arbeitet der Regisseur im Exil.

Dokumentarfilm “Iranian Taboo” läuft an

In diesen Tagen läuft zunächst in Kalifornien der Film “Iranian Taboo“ des iranisch-niederländischen Filmemachers Reza Allamehzadeh an. Der Dokumentarfilm erzählt die Geschichte einer iranischen Bahá’í,  Nadereh, und ihrer 14-jährigen Tochter nach. Sie sind Flüchtlinge, die all ihre Habseligkeiten verkaufen und ihre Heimat wie so viele vor ihnen über die Türkei verlassen mussten. In der Ankündigung heißt es (in deutscher Übersetzung):

Der rund 80-minütige Film führt den Zuschauer quer über die Kontinente, von der Türkei nach Israel, von den USA zurück in den Iran. Er gibt einen einzigartigen Einblick in die Verfolgung der Bahá’í in Iran. So werden Aufnahmen gezeigt vom Bahá’í Institut for Higher Education (BIHE) sowie von den unterdrückten Bauern im Dorf Ivel in der nördlichen Provinz Mazandaran. Diese Szenen innerhalb des Iran wurden durch lokale Kontakte des Filmemachers verdeckt gedreht. Reza Allamehzadeh führte Interviews mit einigen der renommiertesten iranischen Gelehrten, Schriftstellern und Politikern über ein iranisches Tabuthema: die Bahá’í in Iran.

There are 3,500 women in Iran officially registered as training to become ninjas, according to state-run Press TV. The network produced an exceptionally campy video report on the new trend — yes, that’s Michael Bay-style choral music you hear over the slow-motion action scenes — and some experts dispute whether ninjutsu is even a real martial art. The modern schools of Japan’s ancient ninjas didn’t emerge until the 1970s, and their classes look a lot like jujutsu plus acrobatics plus throwing stars. But the women in the video appear to take it quite seriously, and that’s the point.

Ein leerer Basar
Zusammen mit den seit 2005 verhängten Sanktionen soll die iranische Wirtschaft erheblich getroffen werden. Erste Auswirkungen spüren die Menschen in Form von enormen Preissteigerungen schon seit geraumer Zeit: Benzin hat sich um das Dreifache verteuert und auch die Preise für Brot und Milchprodukte haben sich in den vergangen Jahren verdoppelt. Und die iranische Währung, der Rial, befindet sich im freien Fall. Sogar in einer der stolzen Traditionsbranchen des Landes, der Teppichindustrie, sind die Auswirkungen der Sanktionen deutlich zu spüren.

Moreover, Guard chief Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari and former IRGC chief Major General Yahya Rahim-Safavi, now senior military adviser to Khamenei, did not bother to attend their colleagues’ memorials either.It didn’t go unnoticed, however, that Khamenei then conveyed his condolences to Ali Fadavi, commander of the IRGC naval forces, whose father recently died.

Berlin: 20 Jahre nach dem Mykonos-Attentat

Das Mykonos-Attentat fand am 17. September 1992 in einem griechischen Restaurant in der Prager Straße^[1] in Berlin-Wilmersdorf statt. Dort wurden vier kurdische Exilpolitiker im Auftrag des iranischen Geheimdienstes VEVAK erschossen. Der Wirt und ein weiterer Gast wurden schwer verletzt.

Opfer

Bei den Opfern handelte es sich um den Generalsekretär der Demokratischen Partei Kurdistans (DPK-I), Sadegh Scharafkandi, den Repräsentanten der als sozialdemokratisch eingestuften Partei inFrankreich, Fattah Abdoli, den Repräsentanten der Partei in Deutschland, Homayoun Ardalan, und den Dolmetscher Nouri Dehkordi. Sie waren als Gäste eines Kongresses der Sozialistischen Internationale auf Einladung von Björn Engholm zu Besuch in Berlin.

Täter

Drahtzieher des Attentats war der seit Beginn der 1980er Jahre in Deutschland lebende Iraner Kazem Darabi. Er spähte Gegner des Teheraner Regimes in Deutschland aus und leitete die Berliner Filiale der Hisbollah. Die Mörder trafen sich zu Absprachen in einer Moschee in Berlin-Kreuzberg und in Darabis Wohnung in der Detmolder Straße. Die Bekämpfung der Opfer war von dem damaligen Minister für Nachrichtendienste und Sicherheitsangelegenheiten der Islamischen Republik Iran, Ali Fallahian angekündigt worden, nachdem schon der Vorgänger im Amt des Vorsitz der Demokratische Partei Kurdistan-Iran, Dr. Abdul Rahman Ghassemlou 1989 in Wien ermordet worden war. Gegen den von Interpol gesuchten Ali Fallahian bestehen Haftbefehle Deutschlands, der Schweiz und Argentiniens wegen mutmaßlichen Mordes.

Social Media Carries Prison Message From Iranian Activist

Awell-known Iranian political activist, Heshmatollah Tabarzadi, has managed to send out an unprecedented video message from the Rajayishahr prison in which he dismisses Iran’s repressive measures aimed at silencing dissent and predicts they will fail.

“Freedom is the essence of human being I believe, in fact without freedom no choice has a meaning,” he says in the 15-minute-plus video.

The video was recorded recently on a mobile phone and posted on YouTube. It was then quickly shared on Facebook, blogs, and other social media sites.

Tabarzadi the head of the banned Democratic Front of Iran who has been in and out of prison for the past several years, is currently serving an eight-year prison sentence after being convicted of security charges that are often being brought against Iranian political activists.

Radio Free Europe: A Cellphone Takes You Inside An Iranian Prison

Ashort video has surfaced on YouTube that shows a number of well-known Iranian political prisoners taking a walk in the yard of Iran’s Gohardasht prison.

The video appears to have been recorded earlier this year with a cellphone.

 

Activists have identified jailed journalists Ahmad Zeidabadi, Issa Saharkhiz, and Mehdi Bastani and also student activist Majid Tavakoli among the prisoners seen in the video.

RECHTSGUTACHTEN Bundestag: Video-Anhörungen im Asylverfahren sind rechtswidrig

Laut einem Gutachten des Wissenschaftlichen Dienstes des Bundestages sind die vom BAMF durchgeführten Video-Anhörungen im Asylverfahren rechtswidrig. Die Linkspartei fordert die sofortige Beendigung dieser Praxis.

Seit November 2010 hat das BAMF insgesamt 140 Anhörungen im Asylverfahren im Wege Videokonferenz durchgeführt. Zur Begründung führte die Bundesregierung auf, dass steigende Asylantragszahlen eine gleichmäßige Auslastung des Personals der Außenstellen erforderten und auf diesem Wege eine zeitnahe Entscheidung ermöglicht werde.

Das Ayslverfahrensgesetz sieht eine Videoanhörung nicht vor. Geregelt ist die neue Praxis in einer internen Dienstanweisung des BAMF.

Kritisiert wurde das Verfahren unter anderem von Pro Asyl. „Die Asylanhörung ist das Kernstück eines fairen Verfahrens, denn die Beurteilung der Glaubhaftigkeit der Angaben eines Asylsuchenden kann eine Frage von Leben und Tod sein.“ Umso wichtiger sei die Frage nach der Glaubhaftigkeit der Antragstellenden, über die allein in einer persönlichen Anhörung entschieden werden könne.

Video-Anhörung ist rechtswidirg
Das sieht der Wissenschaftliche Dienst des Bundestages ähnlich. In einem Rechtsgutachten kommen die parteiübergreifend tätigen Juristen zu einem eindeutigen Ergebnis: Eine Anhörung ohne eine gesetzliche Ausnahmeregelung ist unzulässig. „Eine interne Dienstanweisung des BAMF ist nicht ausreichend.“

Ulla Jelpke (Die Linke), die das Rechtsgutachten in Auftrag gegeben hat, fordert nun die Bundesregierung auf, die Video-Anhörungen im Asylverfahren „sofort“ zu beenden! „Ziel des Asylverfahrens muss ein möglichst effizienter Schutz Asylberechtigter sein – nicht die möglichst effiziente Verwaltung staatlicher Ressourcen auf Kosten Schutzsuchender.

The Latest from Iran (11 December): Being Tough…To a Point

1950 GMT: Drone Watch. Tonight’s rhetoric comes from Mohammad Javad Larijani, a senior official at the judiciary, who says the violation of Iran’s airspace by the US RQ-170 drone will bring legal action. Claiming US intervention in the affairs of other countries is usually accompanied by terrorist measures, Larijani said, “We believe respecting the rights of other nations is a necessity. Today’s world will no longer accept US and Western leadership. Interfering in [internal] affairs of other countries is a dark habit of the US and [other] Western countries, and we (Iran) oppose all forms of intervention in the affairs of Iran, Iraq, Bahrain, Syria and other countries.”

Iran Video: Authentic Footage of The Capture of the US Drone? (Not Quite.)

State outlet IRNA, describing last Sunday’s landing of the US RQ-170 Sentinel drone in eastern Iran after it was allegedly taken over by Iranian cyber-warfare, has been showing footage of the airplane. Descriptions on YouTube say the channel is claiming this as authentic images of the incident:

Hmm. Not quite. The video is actually promotional footage from Lockheed Martin of a LM Skunkworks Polecat, a possibly forerunner of the RQ-170. The protoype of the Polecat crashed in December 2006 due to an “irreversible unintentional failure in the flight termination ground equipment, which caused the aircraft’s automatic fail-safe flight termination mode to activate”. A 30-second extract from the film:

So did IRNA put off “fake” footage, by implying that years-old footage was that of last Sunday’s incident, or did it make clear this was file imagery of a different, if related, aircraft?
