SadeghLarijaniThumbnail.jpgLarijani, Sadegh Head of the judiciary. The head of the judiciary is required to consent to and sign off every ghisas (retribution), hodoud (crimes against God), and tazirat (crimes against the state) punishment. This includes sentences attracting the death penalty, floggings, and amputations. In this regard, he has personally signed off numerous death penalty sentences, contravening international standards, including stoning (16 people are currently under stoning sentence), executions by suspension strangulation, execution of juveniles, and public executions such as those where prisoners have been hung from bridges in front of crowds of thousands. He has also permitted corporal punishment sentences such as amputations and the dripping of acid into the eyes of the convicted. Since Sadegh Larijani took office, arbitrary arrests of political prisoners, human rights defenders, and minorities have increased markedly. Executions have also increased sharply since 2009. Sadegh Larijani also bears responsibility for systemic failures in the Iranian judicial process to respect the right to a fair trial.

This official role makes him the key figure in the transmission of orders emanating from the Office of the Guide to the Pasdaran’s repression apparatus.
MASharifiThumbnail.jpgSharifi, Malek Ajdar Head of the judiciary in East Azerbaijan. Responsible for grave violations of the right to due process.
TaghipourThumbnail.jpgTaghipour, Reza Minister for information and communications. As minister for information, he is one of the top officials in charge of censorship and control of Internet activities and also all types of communications (notably mobile phones). During interrogations of political detainees, the interrogators make use of the detainees’ personal data, mail, and communications. On several occasions following the last presidential election and during street demonstrations, mobile lines and text messaging were blocked, satellite TV channels were jammed, and the Internet locally suspended or at least slowed down.
ZarghamiThumbnail.jpgZarghami, Ezatollah As head of Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), he is responsible for all programming decisions. IRIB has broadcast forced confessions of detainees and a series of “show trials” in August 2009 and December 2011. These constitute a clear violation of international provisions on fair trial and the right to due process.

The Latest from Iran (23 March): The Sanctions All-is-Well Edition

1034 GMT: Sanctions Watch. Confirming the news that EA posted on Thursday, the Council of the European Union has added 17 Iranians ”responsible for serious human rights violations” to the list of individuals — now 78 in total — subject to a travel ban and an asset freeze.

The decision, endorsed in this morning’s meeting of Foreign Ministers, also banned exports of equipment and software intended for use in the monitoring or interception of internet and telephone communications by Iranian authorities.

The EU’s foreign policy representative Catherine Ashton issued a prepared statement:

The EU remains deeply concerned by the deteriorating human rights situation in Iran. We deplore the continuing increase in executions and the widespread repression of Iranian citizens, including human rights defenders, journalists and members of the opposition. We renew our calls on the Iranian authorities to live up to their international human rights obligations and to protect all fundamental freedoms to which the Iranian people are entitled.

1004 GMT: Political Prisoner Watch. More than 80 Iranian journalists have issued a statement of support for their colleague Masoud Bastani, who has been in prison for 999 days.

Bastani, arrested after the disputed Presidential election of June 2009, is serving a six-year sentence for propaganda against the government, creating unrest, and disturbing public order..

0808 GMT: Ahmadinejad Watch. Are we seeing a shrinking base of support for the President?

After Zohreh Elahian’s criticism (see 0725 GMT), former Government spokesman Gholam Hossein Elham has said that principlists “never accepted Ahmadinejad as President“, voting for him with reservations in 2005 and tolerating him with “a lump in the throat”.

0805 GMT: Political Prisoner Watch. Labour activist Gholam Reza Hosseini has been given a nine-year prison sentence for “collaborating with foreign governments”.

0725 GMT: All the President’s Men. MP Zohreh Elahian, who has been supportive of President Ahmadiejad, has put out a warning to the Government. She said the Social Security Fund needs a “professional head”, not a “problematic figure” like Saeed Mortazavi, the Presidential aide who remains under fire over his alleged involvement in the Kahrizak detention centre abuses of summer 2009.

Elahian also said impeachment proceedings against the Minister of Labor will resume on 3 April.

0705 GMT: On a morning dominated by assurances over the economy  in Iranian State media, Press TV takes the award for Rosiest-Coloured Glasses:

A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman has defended Beijing’s decision to keep importing Iranian crude despite the US sanctions on Tehran, insisting that the move is not in breach of the UN Security Council’s resolutions.

China’s oil imports from Iran were based on the country’s economic development needs and do not violate any UN resolutions or damage the interests of third parties, Hong Lei told reporters on Thursday.

“China opposes any country imposing its domestic law on another country. We oppose the practice of saddling unilateral sanctions on a third country,” he added.

So what’s missing? Perhaps the revelation on Thursday that China’s imports of Iranian oil had fallen 45% in February.

Press TV also frames a letter from the Indian Foreign Minister to Parliament as “India to Continue Purchasing Iranian Crude Oil“. State news agency IRNA’s lead story is on the same topic.

So what’s missing? This sentence from the Foreign Minister’s statement, which points to the US-led strategy to wean countries off reliance on Tehran’s crude: “India is also trying to diversify its sources of crude oil imports.”

Activist Hossein Jafar Ali Jasbi Is the Latest on Billström’s Delivery List to the Islamic Butchers in Evin; Deportation Date of 6 March 2012 – TAKE ACTION!

Hossein Jafar Ali Jasbi was born on 22 September 1972 to a family is among the tens of thousands of families that have suffered in the hands of the “men of God” and their gallows in Evin and other slaughterhouses. By the time he was 10 years old, Hossein had lost his beloved older sister Mehri, age 27, and a brother Reza, age 25; they were among those tens of thousands executed in the 1980s.

Hossein’s father, who wasn’t even politically active, was put behind bars like the hundreds of mothers, fathers, and relatives who have been arrested, jailed tortured, forced to confess to activities that they had nothing to do with, and then even put on “trial” in Islamic “courts” and sentenced to years-long imprisonment or – as in so many cases – even executed. Hosein’s father not only lost 2 children to the gallows of the keeper of Evin, but spent many years in that hell too. He was released only in 1989. Read the rest of this entry

Read the rest of this entry

URGENT: Execution of Sakineh Ashtiani Believed to be Imminent: 5 Things You Should Do NOW

According to recent media reports, the Islamic Republic is once again preparing to execute Sakineh Ashtiani.

We ask all concerned individuals to take the following urgent actions:

1) Contact your State Department or Foreign Ministry (addresses below) with the following message:
I demand that this government exert the utmost diplomatic pressure on the Islamic Republic of Iran to:

a) prevent the execution of Sakineh Ashtiani, and
b) secure the immediate and unconditional freedom of Sakineh Ashtiani and her lawyer, Houtan Kian.

I specifically request direct economic sanctions against the leaders of the Islamic Republic of Iran regime. They are are all – from the executives, lawmakers, judiciary, to the IRGC and beyond – criminals and murderers. They should be dealt with as such.

Sincerely,
[your name]

2) Contact Bernard Kouchner, the Foreign Minister of France(bernard.kouchner@diplomatie.gouv.fr), with the following message asking France to be the first to close the doors to the Embassy of the Islamic Republic in France:

Dear Mr. Kouchner,
It has come to my attention that the Islamic Republic once again is threatening to execute Sakineh Ashtiani. If the Islamic Republic executes Sakineh Ashtiani, I urge the French government to close the doors to the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in France. The honorable people of France, and in particular the women of France, have shown their broad and consistent support for Sakineh Ashtiani and her family; Carla Bruni Sarkozy has publicly advocated in Sakineh’s defense, and drawn a slanderous response from the Islamic regime for doing so; and France’s President Sarkozy has taken it as his personal duty to defend Sakineh Ashtiani. France should take the international lead in closing the regime’s embassy in Paris. It is the only appropriate diplomatic response to the Islamic Republic regime’s ongoing perpetration of human rights atrocities.
Sincerely,
[your name]

3) Send this sample letter (available in ENG, DE & FR) to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay, and encourage everyone you know to do the same. [ SAMPLE LETTER ] Contact addresses to send to: inquiries@un.orgnpillay@ohchr.orgurgent-action@ohchr.org

4) Fill out the contact form for UN Women to
a) demand a UN resolution to criminalize stoning, and
b) to demand immediate expulsion from the UN Commission on the Status of Women of the Islamic Republic of Iran and all other states whose authority is dependent on gender apartheid and violence against women.

If Sakineh is executed, the UN will be held responsible for its refusal to act or even issue a strong statement against the execution of Sakineh Ashtiani.

5) If the Islamic Republic executes Sakineh Ashtiani, regardless of how they implement the murder (stoning or hanging), people living near offices and embassies of the Islamic Republic should immediately deposit a pile of stones (painted red if possible) in front of the door or gate to the regime’s office or embassy. If feasible, tape photos and/or posters of Sakineh to the doors, windows, gates, etc.

We and all humanity thank you for your urgent action in this matter.

EIL: US-Senat beschliesst Sanktionen gegen iranische Zentralbank

Read the rest of this entry

Diplomacy

  • Aftermath of attacks against the two British compounds in Tehran:
    • Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast: “Tehran will retaliate in kind to the steps taken by London.”
    • SNN, mouthpiece of the Student Basij: “The students who entered the embassy had no part in vandalizing the properties of the British embassy apart from smashing a few windows and bottles of liquor. The destruction began as the masses entered… On the one hand, the students were trying to secure the embassy ground, and on the other hand there were some who were inclined to destroy the embassy property and insisted upon vandalism… It is not clear which party those who were inclined to vandalism belonged to, but it was totally clear that they were not students. Some had only come for vandalism and it is not unthinkable that the Old Imperialism itself had designed it to achieve its media goals through them… ” Read the rest of this entry

Eye on Iran: Britain Downgrades Diplomatic Ties With Iran

Top Stories

NYT: ”Britain said on Wednesday that it had closed its embassy in Tehran, withdrawn all its diplomats and ordered Iran to do the same within 48 hours at its own diplomatic mission in London in the worst rupture of relations in decades. The measures were announced in Parliament by Foreign Secretary William Hague a day after Iranian protesters shouting ‘Death to England’ stormed the British Embassy compound and a diplomatic residence in Tehran, tearing down the British flag, smashing windows, defacing walls and briefly detaining six staff members in what appeared to be a state-sponsored protest against Britain’s tough new economic sanctions against Iran.  The attack was the most serious diplomatic breach since the traumatic assault on the American Embassy after Iran’s Islamic Revolution in 1979.  Mr. Hague had initially expressed outrage over the attack, saying Britain held Iran’s government responsible and promising ‘other, further, and serious consequences.’ In Parliament Wednesday he declared: ‘We have now closed the British embassy in Tehran. We have decided to evacuate all our staff.’ All British diplomats had now left Iran, he said. ‘We require the immediate closure of the Iranian embassy in London and all staff must leave in the next 48 hours,’ he said… Separately, Norway said it had temporarily closed its embassy in Tehran but had not withdrawn diplomatic personnel. A spokeswoman, Hilde Steinfeld, said the Norwegian authorities decided on the move late Tuesday after the attack on the British facilities.” http://t.uani.com/tG9VEO  Read the rest of this entry

Brüssel: Iran refuses visas to EU Parliament delegation

BRUSSELS, Oct 26 (KUNA) — The five members of the European Parliament Delegation for Iran, who were shortly leaving to Iran on a visit from 31 October to 4 November 2011, learned Wednesday that the Iranian authorities would not issue visas to the participants, Tarja Cronberg chair, Delegation for Relations with Iran in the European Parliament, said in a statement here tonight.
“This decision means that the visit is effectively cancelled, despite considerable preparations and planning. No clear reasons were given for this unexpected decision,” noted the statement.

“The delegation very much regrets the fact that the Iranian authorities chose to break off this timely opportunity for dialogue,” it added.
The members of the delegation who were scheduled to travel came from five of the political groups in the European Parliament. They were Tarja Cronberg (Finland), Kurt Lechner (Germany), Cornelia Ernst (Germany), Kathleen van Brempt (Belgium) and Marietje Schaake (Netherlands).

The UK’s addition of 50 new individuals from various governmental bodies in Iran to the already existing travel bansimposed by the European Union on 32 Iranian officials last April is an important step in further ensuring the end of impunity for Iran’s worst human rights violators.

Alarmed West dismisses Iran nuclear “charm offensive”
Western powers said on Wednesday an Iranian “charm offensive” had failed to dispel mounting fears Iran may be working to develop a nuclear bomb, but Washington’s envoy did not rule out engaging with Tehran after it offered fresh talks. Glyn Davies, U.S. ambassador to the U.N. atomic watchdog, said a letter from Iran’s nuclear negotiator to the European Union’s foreign policy chief did not contain any new commitments by Tehran to address international concerns about its aims.

Statement by the Spokesperson of EU High Representative Catherine Ashton on the persecution of the Baha’i community in Iran

The spokesperson of Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign
Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission, issued the
following statement yesterday:

The High Representative wishes to express her serious concern about the recent
wave of arrests of Baha’i citizens, and the shutting down of an educational
centre of the Baha’i community in Iran.
The European Union recalls that freedom of thought, conscience and religion or
belief are fundamental rights which must be guaranteed under all circumstances
according to article 18 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political
Rights, which Iran has signed up to and ratified. The European Union calls
on Iran to immediately release all individuals detained on religious grounds,
to put an end to the ongoing persecution of the Baha’i community, including
in the field of education, and to refrain from all forms of discrimination
against religious minorities, so as to guarantee the full respect for freedom
of religion or belief in Iran.

URGENT: Stop the Illegal Deportation of Mitra Kahrom to the Misogynist Islamic Republic of Iran.

Mitra Kahrom was forced to endure extreme violence at the hands of a brutal husband whose crimes against Mitra are endorsed by a brutal and misogynist regime. Unable to tolerate life under such repression, Mitra went to the streets in protest against the Islamic Republic; she was identified and hunted by the regime. Subsequently, she fled to Sweden and has been openly and vocally active in organizations that oppose the Islamic Republic regime. Mitra has numerous grounds on which to claim asylum in Sweden. Despite this, the Swedish government wants to send her back to a place in hell where the flames burn hotter for women: the Swedish government wants to deport Mitra back to Iran. We at Mission Free Iran oppose the Swedish government’s illegal efforts to deport Mitra, and we ask that you join us in demanding Mitra’s right to asylum in Sweden. A sample letter-writing action appears below Mitra’s story.

EU: Iran and Human Rights

The EU is greatly concerned about the steady deterioration of the human rights situation in Iran following the June 2009 presidential elections. The EU has issues numerous statements calling on Iran to respect the international human rights obligations it has entered into, including theInternational Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

On 21 March 2011, EU Foreign Ministers expressed their alarm at the dramatic increase in executions in recent months and the systematic repression of Iranian citizens, including human rights defenders, lawyers, journalists, women’s activists, bloggers, persons belonging to ethnic and religious minorities and members of the opposition, who face harrassment and arrests for exercising their legitimate rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.
