ICRIR: Iranian Activists in Cyprus Appeal for International Support to Stop the Illegal Deportation of Opposition Activist Hadi Jahednorouzi
Philadelphia -— Masoud Khaghani and Maryam Aramesh, asylum-seekers in Cyprus, appeared in a special episode of the Iranian television program Nahade Mardomi as part of an urgent effort to stop the illegal deportation by the Cyprus government of a known Iranian political opposition activist.
The two members of the Cyprus Refugee Rights Movement (CRRM) joined refugee rights activist Soheila Nikpour on Andisheh TV to ask for international support in stopping the Cyprus government’s illegal deportation of Hadi Jahednorouzi, a known anti-regime political activist and asylum-seeker.
The Islamic Republic considers the act of seeking political asylum abroad a crime of “propagating against the regime” and has promised to prosecute returned political asylum-seekers. The charge of “propagating against the regime” can carry a death penalty sentence in Iran. It is therefore illegal under international law to deport political activists to Iran.
During the broadcast, the activists reported that the CRRM had secured a lawyer to represent Mr. Jahednorouzi. Given the dire economic situation for refugees in Cyprus, the group is asking for donations to help pay for lawyers’ fees. Donations are being collected online at the CRRM website. Mr. Iman Foroutan, host of Nahade Mardomi, was among the first to donate to Hadi Jahednorouzi’s legal fund.
Mr. Khaghani reported that Hadi Jahednorouzi, who is being kept in detention in advance of the illegal deportation, has been given nothing but bread and olives to eat for the past day. The Cypriot authorities have also denied him access to his essential medications; Mr. Jahednorouzi recently suffered a stroke and is partially paralyzed as a result. The Cypriot authorities have even denied him access to his wheelchair – a violation of Hadi’s fundamental rights.
Although CRRM filed a case with the European Court of Human Rights on behalf of Mr. Jahednorouzi in an effort to stop the deportation, the Court chose not to uphold its mandate, in violation of international refugee law and in violation of Article 3 of the European Charter of Human Rights, prohibition of torture. It is expected that Mr. Jahednorouzi will be deported today, August 27, 2011. The direct flight on Mahan Air to Imam Khomeini airport in Tehran will depart at 6 p.m. from Larnaca airport.
Refugee rights and human rights activists in Cyprus are asked to join the CRRM at the airport in advance of the flight to protest the Cypriot government’s illegal deportation of an Iranian political activist to Iran, where his health and life will be in danger.
