Statement from UANI on New Sanctions Against Iran’s Central Bank
United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) President, Ambassador Mark D. Wallace, issued the following statement today regarding the White House’s announcement of sanctions against Iran’s Central Bank:
This is a positive first step by the White House. Sanctions against Iran’s Central Bank, if properly implemented and enforced, will severely isolate the Iranian regime from world markets, and limit the capital it has to pursue nuclear weapons and fund terrorism.
We hope President Obama will follow today’s announcement with even more robust action to fully cut off the Iranian regime from the international financial system, including sanctioning the Belgium-based SWIFT network for the banking privileges it provides Iran’s Central Bank.
UANI has regularly called for sanctions against Iran’s Central Bank, and on December 2, 2011wrote to President Obama following reports that the Administration was opposed to such sanctions.

Eye on Iran: Banking Hub Adds to Pressure on Iran

WSJ: „An organization that is central to the international banking system said it is working with U.S. and European governments to address their concerns that its financial services are being used by Iran to avoid sanctions and conduct illicit business. Current and former U.S. officials said that if the Belgium-based organization, the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication, or Swift, bans sanctioned Iranian entities from using its network, Tehran could find itself virtually incapable of conducting electronic financial transactions. ‚This would be the knockout blow,‘ said Avi Jorisch, a former U.S. Treasury Department official who has worked on Swift… Swift’s board of directors is comprised of executives from some of the world’s most important banks. This week, activist group United Against Nuclear Iran wrote to board members arguing that they are acting outside U.S. law by allowing designated Iranian banks to use Swift’s services. They argued that Swift’s guidelines mandate that its cut ties to Iran.“http://t.uani.com/vZJvjX Lies den Rest dieses Beitrags
